boot up problem

My 5 year old computer suddenly has a bootup problem. I power on, my monitor screen remains black but my computer appears to be going through bootup process (harddrive light flashing). I shut it down (press the power button to switch the computer off), reboot, and wahlah, the computer works. I've done this a half dozen times, same thing happens.
I tried restoring to an earlier date, but same problem.

All else works fine.....no delays, no slowdowns. Any suggestions?

My initial reaction is a video problem.

Do you have a video card, or onboard (motherboard) video?

Re-install the video (VGA) driver(s) as a starting point.

Wahlah! will only work for a limited period of time, after which you may want to try abra cadabra - but again, YMMV

Does it boot up first time if you (first) lay the PC on its side?

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a defective connecting cable, from the Video card. It would work if the PC was laying on its side, but not if it was the right way up!!

With all the power you can muster - launch it - and buy a new one.
