camping/hurricane lanterns

Postby Ray.Charles » April 27, 2010, 9:10 pm

Yesterday was our first day at our village home. A thunderstorm took out the electric supply in late afternoon. No problem. Had enough stored water for nice shower, etc. It was cool enough to be comfortable even without any fan. Dined in candlelight, and retired early to bed. Nice and romantic. What killed the evening was nonstop croaking of perhaps thousands of bullfrogs sending out invitations for sex. At around 3-30 am, got into the car for the drive back to the city. I like nature but that was too goddamn much nature for me.
Do you know where in Udon, I can buy camping/hurricane lanterns. One kind is a kerosene lamp with the wick enclosed in glass.

Don't worry Ray - it was just 'one of those days' yesterday.
I live in Romyen (so just off the ring road) electric went our same as you, came back on about 3 am. I think. Very unusual for it to be off for that long, but it was a pretty robust storm. Longest was off for 2 hours last year, so beaten that already this!!
Anyway electric was still on at the ring road & at Big C so went there to grab some 'no-electric' supplies. Nothing like a kerosene lamp though & I have not seen that type of fuel sold anywhere either.
Global might be worth a look for that or alternatives. The do have 'emergency' type lighting there - so connected to the mains & cuts in off re-chargeable batteries automatically when power fails.
It is a bit of a balance between cost & how often it happens though - couple of torches, spare batteries & candles have usually done it for me.

Bob, as of 5-00 pm today when we came back (again) to the city, electricity was still off, that was 24 hours and counting.
Red67, thanks for the lead; which Ngee Soon is that, the old one or the new one? Were you able to find Kerosene?

Amazing Thailand.
Next week it'll be water.
Great, huh?
If you envision yourself on a years-long camping trip it doesn't do your head in as fast.
I'm considering building a small nuclear reactor in my backyard -- strictly for energy, of course.

We live outside the city so we've put up with our share of power outages.....although not as bad these days. We keep an ample supply of candles on hand (buy the 1" thick white ones at Ngeesoon) and hurricane-style candle lamps at the big garden decoration store a few km before you arrive in Na-ka (on the way to Nongkai). The candles burn for 4+ hours. We also keep a few rechargeable LED flashlights (also from Ngeesoon) handy. The lights cost about 140 Baht and can maintain a continuous light for most of a night on a single charge. If you're into reading while the lights are out (not much else to do), you can jury-rig one of the small LED bike lamps with a piece of velcro (for a headband) and rubber bands. Great for reading when the lights are out or for venturing out in the yard for a few catfish late at night. Beats candle light or kerosene.

Thanks. Hurricane lamps that I found runs on gasoline, pretty risky stuff to be lying around. I think I will go for the big candles and the LEDs. Do the batteries hold the charge, or when you would need them they will be out of charge. There were a lot folks walking around with the flash lights tied to their head looking like coal-miners; they were catching frogs. We were given one, that my lady's mother cooked for brunch that even my lady declined.
Which side of the road driving to Na Ka is the garden store?
By the way, it was around 36 hours before the power came back. Heard that a palm tree fell on the power line. Well, there are a lot of palm trees around.

Bought a large flashlight/lantern (torch) with a handle on the side from Tesco a few years ago that fits the bill for me. Takes four D-cell flashlight batteries and they last a fair amount of time. Gives off a good strong beam.

After we had a 36 hour outage we made a vow a few months ago that if we have a power outage that lasts more than a couple of hours then we would hightail it to town for the night. Our preferred hotel is the Charoen but it gives us a chance to try different hotels and enjoy some of the restaurants in Udon.

The garden store in on the left hand side as you're heading to Nongkai, a few km before you hit Naka. Very large temple-tiled roof. They sell the candle lamps inside the roofed in area.

I've seen LED emergency plug in lights that only light up when the power goes off (or when you pull them out of the socket). Can't remember where....but maybe Tesco or Homepro. We have two LED flashlights.....130 baht each.....always keep one fully charged. You can leave it on and have adequate light for most of the night on a single charge.
The LED bike lights can be found at LA bike shop or the bike shop one just before the Exxon Station near the complex (opposite side of the Exxon Station/Kasikorn Bank).

Hi,
I myself would not use the hurricane lamps in the house, to much danger, and fumes, great for shore fishing. Tescos do something like a hurricane lamp in their camping department, in there new store, it runs on batteries and has a flu. tube in it. Far safer for the house when there are little ones around. I'd also be careful of candles in a wooden house.

Makro had one plug-in-emergency-led lamp on display.....price I think was 160 baht. It's the kind you leave plugged in all the time....when the power goes out, it shines.

having lived the life such as Dances with Wolves, candles are a killer, especially if you keep replecing them in the same holder without cleaning the old ones out, because when she burns down to the bottom, all the old wicks catch fire, and you end up with a much bigger flaming fire ball, and if curtains are near, look out..falling alseep with candles going is a killer too..we lost afew souls that way..solar chats, solar...I no I keep harping on about it, but a car battery , a small solar panel and a couple of 16w lights and your away, no more messing around looking for batteries and candles or worst petrol..comes in handy for charging the flat battery on the car too..
