Changing language

Postby stattointhailand » January 30, 2010, 1:45 pm

Can anyone please advise a computer dimwit how to go about changing the language on a computer to English.
It currently has the "start" button in Thai, together with about 60% of the icons.
The keyboard seems to type in English though.

1.Open the Control Panel.
2.Open Regional and Language Options.
3.Click the Languages tab.
4. Click Advanced tab

You will be able to enter English but not Graphical User Interface (GUI) if installed with a Thai version CD

I haven't looked at what it may do for you but there is a Language pack available from Microsoft at

Thanks Charlie. I used my laptop to map out the path, and then followed the icons etc in the Thai version.
When I get to the Advanced tab, all the setting are the same on both computers exept one has everything written in Thai.
They both show Thai, and both have about 20 or so of the options ticked (simplified chinese/bengali/korean etc)

From what I understand a real Thai version of Windows XP is not available.

Windows XP is available in many languages. In addition, MUI packs and Language Interface Packs translating the user interface are also available for certain languages.

In Microsoft terminology, a Language Interface Pack (LIP) is a localized skin for localizing software in emerging or minority language markets, such as Lithuanian, Serbian, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil and Thai. Based on MUI technology, a LIP also requires the software to have a base installed language and provides users with an approximately 80 percent localized user experience by translating a reduced set of user interface elements. Unlike MUI packs which are available only to Microsoft volume license customers and for select SKUs of Windows Vista, a Language Interface Pack is available freely and can be installed on a licensed copy of Microsoft Windows or Office and a fixed base language.

From what I understand from Wikipedia some Language Interface Pack (LIP) should be installed for the Thai language. So this must be done on your laptop to. So I think, but I am not sure about that, removing the Thai LIP (un-installing) will give you back the original (hopefully English) interface.
