Getting To and Around Khon Kaen
Despite its relatively small land area and population, Khon Kaen has one of the busiest domestic airports in Thailand, with as many as 20 scheduled flights every day. From Bangkok, tourists can take a Thai Airways flight to Khon Kaen three times a day. You can get in touch with Thai Airways through tel. nos. 1566, 0 2280 0060, and 0 2628 2000. The government is currently working on plans for a direct International service.
To get to Khon Kaen by train, travelers will have to use the State Railway of Thailand from Hua Lamphong Railway Station in Bangkok. There are trains that depart for Khon Kaen every day. The railway station's tel. nos. is 1690, 0 2223 7010-20.
To take the bus, tourists should go to the Northern Mochit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok. There are buses that depart every 15 minutes for Khon Kaen. You can contact the bus company, Transport Co. Ltd., at tel. no. 0 2936 2852-66.
Meanwhile, to get to Khon Kaen by car, simply follow the number four lane on Highway 2.
Once in Khon Kaen, it’s easy to travel anywhere in the city through the two main roads, Na Muang and Klang Muang, which span the length of the city from north to south. These roads are parallel to Highway 2, the "Friendship Highway," which links to Bangkok and to Laos in the northeast as well as to the city of Udon Thani and the provinces of Kalasin and Mahasarakham.
For short distances, try hailing a local songthaew, which costs only 8 baht per trip, which you pay once you get out. A wave of the hand is all you need to hail a songthaew and you ring the bell to stop.
