Once we got stooped and the Officer said we did nothing wrong but wanted to know if Falang have good heart and would give 100bt. We were on the road again when wife told me, I said "gees I would have given 200bt for honesty".

There is a lot of work for expat in Laos. If you have skills then you can make a good living. Aside from teaching there are a plethora of NGO's who recruit skiled people. I'm not sure where there is a job database. http://www.acvientiane.com has some basic information - but I'm not sure of an extensive loas job board....if anyone knows id be happy to learn.....

I wouldn't jump ship so early, we will have a new government within 19 months, or sooner, Thais are bit uptight right now can you blame them. Have you learned to speak the language, even a little and smile can go a long ways.

But, you got to live your dream not mine.

Thailand has become so popular over the past couple decades that it's been fairly harvested and pretty well saturated.

Vientiane seems a bit like Chiang Mai was in the late 80's, though less developed, and certainly with less resources.

However, I know people doing well there also, some married to locals. If you're willing to sacrifice a bit, and are in good health - not needing proper medical facilities, etc. - I think VTE is definitely a "ripe" destination with plenty of opportunities.

Apparently one job screaming out to be filled is a comprehensive website with an active Job Board/DB. Ideally, at least one team member should be based in Vientiane, prepared to do lots of legwork.

Anyone game? Happy to help from Nong Khai.

Would go myself if I was 10 (or 20) years younger, and single...

Ahh yes, Chiang Mai in the late '70s through to the end of the '80s was like heaven on earth. I do not like Chiang Mai much now.

When my very good friend took me to Ban Chiang to look at the ancient ruins she remarked that if I wanted to know what Laos was like now, there was my answer. Well, she was joking but the point was that Laos was far behind Thailand.
