The first sign that the software was genuine was the sturdy box marked with a gazillion warnings and advisories. The second sign was the first validation with MS and update. No problem, it's the real mccoy.....but MS7 home pro version was something like 5000 baht......."licensed for distribution only to specific countries within Asia Pacific and intended for system builders only" They have the cheaper MS7 basic/home versions as well....I think the cheapest is about 3800.
OpenOffice is a Sun Microsoft product......mimics MS Office......with word processing, spreadsheet, data base all built into one. Fully compatible with all my MS-generated documents (so far). As far as I'm concerned it looks like and works virtually identical to MS products (I'm sure there's differences, but so far, all the key punches/shortcuts that I've used are the same). It's a 145meg download.......once installed, it loads quickly!
Anki is a flashcard program, also free, that I use for my Thai lessons to help my vocab retention. If you're trying to learn any language (or even trying to improve you English vocab) this is an excellent program.
Audacity is an audio editor/recorder program. Again, I use it with my Thai. I download my Thai lessons from the University of Hawaii and Wisconsin (they're available to the general public for downloading)....most of the lessons have MP3 tracks....I load them into audacity and play back with full editing capability (like you can clip a phrase, paste it into
Anki, and create a new flashcard with built-in audio).
PDF-X-Change viewer is an open source program that does everything (IMO) that I'd ever use Adobe Acrobat for. I hate Adobe Acrobat.....it's highly bloated, slow, and has gigantic updates. For what the common person does with pdf document, pdf-x-change viewer does it all with speed and no hassle.
I use Wordweb while I'm reading online documents and come across a word that I don't understand. It's small and a simple keytouch does the trick.
I've been using Avast as my anti-virus for over 5 years. Updates everyday in the background, doesn't slow down my system, and has kept me virus free for that time. Norton, AVG, and a few others that I've tried over the years were too much of a drag on my system. I haven't tried the new free MS program.....but I understand it's pretty effective in keeping your system clean.
Starter is a simple download that shows you what your system is loading when you start your computer. I use a clean startup....try to keep power-on to hands on the keyboard to 1 minute. If your system is taking a long time to boot, often times it's because you're trying to kickstart the system with MSN, Yahoo, ebay, Skype, younameit at the same time. Thais are really good at this......it seems they feel the more icons in the lower right hand of your screen, the better off you are. Just the opposite is true. Simple to use program.
Spybot is my partner to Avast.......scans my system for spyware when I want it to. Hasn't failed me yet. Again, I understand that the new MS program may do what Avast and spybot does in one shake of the dice..........I'm going to do some more reading up on the program (Microsoft Essentials). You do need a genuine windows install to use the program......it'll check your system before allowing you to download the program.
Picasa is a photo editing program by Google.......does everything and much more than I'll ever need. Superior face recognition if you want to group your photos (without actually changing the location of the photos on your computer) by face.
I forgot to mention that I've been using gmail for several years. Sure makes it nice when you change computers. No messing with address books, old emails, etc.
Hope I covered all the bases.
