Safe Internet Banking

Postby BobHelm » February 7, 2010, 3:26 pm

I am a bit over protective about my internet access.
I have an active firewall, a virus checker and malware software. In addition when I am scanning the net I have Adblock plus running & check WOT stats before I log onto a new website.
I have been running Internet Banking with HSBC for about 6 years now - with never a complaint (about the service, that is, 1 result was faulty but that was human error on their part). In the past I have been offered free McAfee anti virus software by HSBC but I have always turned them down, as I am happy with AVG. This morning when I logged on they offered me something else....
Rapport Software by Trusteer.
I had never heard of it before, so did a bit of internet research before I said yes, or no.
Turns out to be a package that quite a lot of banks are now offering to their customers for free. It can be run on top of any other security systems you have (even the lot that I have :D ). It differs from any other virus software in that all it concentrates on is a users Username & Password. So its aim is solely to prevent these two pieces of information be seized or copied by any program.
Sounded a good idea to me so I have downloaded & added it. The downloading was quick, installing it took a little longer - was simple, just took some time...

Hi.
I'm surprised any bank is still using only user name and password only. Very easy to circumvent if using other peoples computers.
Most banks nowadays, I'm using Lloyd's, have a U.N. and P.W. plus memorable information. This works by you putting in a mixture of letters and numbers. I myself use 15 letters and numbers, when you visit your account you enter account number, this is a number given to you by your bank and is not your account number, and password. If this is entered in correctly you will be taken to the next page which will ask you 3 letters or numbers of your mem. information which you have to enter. Every time your account is activated the three letters or numbers are different so the combination of the three is immense. If you answer incorrect three times your account is locked and you have to phone the bank and tell them the password which they gave you, for phone calls, and answer a few questions before they will tell you anything and unlock your account.
I myself would not use a bank which does not do this. To unsafe in this day and age. IMHO.

& indeed the HSBC signon is a similar system for their accounts douglas.
This is EXTRA protection on top of that.
If you are happy with the security that the bank are providing fine - I think Google were happy that their security was bullet proof until some people in China took a different viewpoint...
