Satellite TV in Udon Thani

Postby ijwelch » February 13, 2009, 8:48 pm

I'm getting a bit racked off with TrueVisions.

Are there any decent alternatives up here? I can't get cable in my area.

If you're getting decent TV from another source can you please share the info so I can give True the boot.

Cheers.

According to my wife her sister bought this system and after a few months it stopped working. The excuse was typically Thai "exposier to the sun" can you believe that

Hi all

Staying at Top Mansion a week or 2 ago when the wife noticed an ad for a company called Top up TV. Followed up as they had 7 / 8 channels including Australia Network which is good for the Aussies with the AFL season approaching, national Geographic and others. Cost was 200 baht per month and with set up cost it works out to around 4200 baht.

Going to give it a try if only for Oz Network.

typical thai excuse they all sound like republicans blame some one else or come up with a lame excuse
I am moving out to the boonies in a month or 2 and from what I read about satellite TV and Internet
does not leave me with much hope in getting comfortable living there. I posted a web site the problem for me is they do not have it in english so once again I am in the dark and have to depend on my wife translation. I also know of another one it called Jsat but when I email them they never responded back maybe you might get lucky

They have a Satelite set up here specially designed for the "Grey Army" (Retired poeple with Caravans "Trailers" who drive around the country on permenant holiday) that sell for about Au 250 which includes decoder and smart card etc. They offer over 170 stations from around the world, so I really cant understand why you cant buy a similar setup in Thailand. By the way, the sister apparently forked out 32,000 baht for the sun affected setup :yikes: not exactly value for money in my opinion

the sad truth is they won't let any outsiders in with there technology and there own technology is behind
in times. or they are just plain lazy or greedy you take your choice. maybe it fear of the world outside of Thailand. it look like I will give that top TV a call and try it out the price seem reasonable 3500 baht for a year of TV plus the installation fee of if I remember 3600 baht. and also it looks like I will have to try TOT satellite Internet service my nephew said & he works for the Government to get the best service which is 2600 baht a month you should not have any problems so I am told through translation LOL. I wanted to go the PSI way but no one seem to speak english and my wife does not understand enough about satellite TV
and the C/Band system which I do had one in the states also satellite ISP both were excellent in my opinion I got ala carte TV and only paid for what I wanted as for the Internet the speeds were very good
on every thing I did on the PC yes it was expensive but to me it was worth the money 70.00 USD a month
plus the cost of the system which was around 600 USD and my C/Band cost me over 1K USD so I had some real money invested but it kept me home so in the end it was a savings

I'm not over-excited about Truevisions either. I have the platinum option, so that does give me BBC Prime which offers some good stuff, but really rely on it for football, news, music, discovery, nature progs and sometimes movies. I'm outside of Udon and village based, people wake and sleep relatively early, so I don't find myself watching that much anyway.

My 'sister-in-law' had a satellite system installed a few years back. A one-off payment 0f 7-8,000 baht for big dish and 'box'. No more to pay.Offers 80-90 channels, but many not in English. Main reason for installation because good signal/reception of Thai stations.

I stand to be corrected, but appears Truevisions, best if not exactly brilliant option for me. Having only Thai channels would send me completely bonkers, although some argue I'm there already. Stayed in fair number of hotels in Thailand and never seen better. Do the guys who run bars/restaurants know more? I recall one Englishman owning a Nong Khai restaurant on the riverfront say 200m along from the the eastern end of the market, who appeared to have a quality set up, but some time since I've called in.

BD you will find with satellite the less interference in the signal the better the reception
I am sure you all ready know this so when you signal comes over a lake or river it some what better
I have been in the irish clock who has true vision and he has a big projection TV and it looks very good to me (the signal) also Harry bar same so I do not understand why some of you get crappy signals at home
or is it the technician who can not do there job correctly. even in the D/N watering hole they have true and all there TV come in clear as a bell my biggest problem is getting the programs I want from the

I am not all the satisfied with UBC either, but I have found with time,it is the best for my American sports ,MMA & boxing and English Premier football games!I am a movie junkie and they have plenty of movie channels!

I have seen alot of other options that some guys like better, but I guess it depends on what is your preference in programming !

For some the lower cost cable suits their basic needs ,plus they get to pay alot less!

As was mentioned before, there are a few one off satelite setups that have alot of channels and suit the interests of different Nationalities.I rent,as I don't plan on having to stay in the area and I don't like all the channels of no interest to me!

I'm with Stan on UBC/Truevision, consider it the best option out here in the boonies. Chose their Platinum service because do enjoy live boxing, American sports (but no ice hockey, alas), gotten into watching the live English Premier footy matches and the movies. Right now I'm watching "Gone With The Wind" on TCM channel, IMO the best movie ever made. If anyone knows a satellite system that offers access to American TV channels I would be all ears, of course.

Also, for the internet I have TOT Ipstar's 1 Mb as ISP and satisfied with it. It's at least on a par with TOT ADSL that we had at the last couple houses we rented in town.

Lastly, we had a nephew install a one off satellite dish/box for the wife's TV viewing. She watches her soaps every night and little else on it but she's happy with it.

Yep, three satellite dishes scattered around the outside of the house. Neighbors probably think this is a CIA listening post or something.

I have had True (UBC) for 3 months and don't have any picture quality problems. The choice of channels depends on which package you choose (platinum, gold etc). If you have a weak signal it could be because there is an obstical in the way. The satillite is not positioned on the equator so trees, bushes etc might need to be cleared. Also the roof overhang could be an issue. My complaint would be the price! I pay the same price for True gold as I do for the same kind of package in europe. I guess it's because there is no competition.

I would like to inquire about TOT Ipstar. I've heard so many different comments about this system that I don't know what to believe. Anyone using Ipstar please give me your comments. I would appretiate that.
