A friend of mine that has been living in Thailand for 20 years +
put it this way:

Thai woman are very, very good at " the waiting game ", they hold out
as long needed if they find a man they want waiting for and still smile.

His brother learn´d that lesson, sweet girl for years untill he build her
house.
Now she is less sweet and he put all his money there and is rather under
her thumb.

what a joke if you spend a million baht on house and pay cash your a fool plain & simple you buy a car and pay cash same applies your a fool simple answer is if you don't own it finance it you have no idea what in the minds of your bed partner wether here in Thailand or your home country as for sin sod I said it in my previous post it a personal choice for me I would not pay my reason is I don't buy family love and I will not buy a wife my daddy told me when i was little boy when the money go the love go with it you see the tee shirts no money no honey there all over open your eyes us men have 2 heads with only enough blood supply to fill one so when the lower head has the blood the upper head has no brains and the legs become wobbly
and brains get dizzy and you make dumb choices AMEN

I know, it's very late, but I just want to give an info about what happened in the end. We end up with 100000 Baht sinsod, I support my wife's parents monthly, we got married in March 2009, live together since May and I'm very happy that I haven't listened to some of the advices here and ran away. We are very happy together and she is a perfect wife for me. Thanks again for all your open answeres and advices.

Be a man and stand up and have a meeting with her father and basically tell him that you will not pay him this money , tell him that you love your fiance and that you will happily help your extended family financially but only when you can afford to and if your future father-in-law declines your generous offer , then you must ask your future wife if she loves you enough to defy her family and if she will not then you must run and never look back because if you pay that extortionate out of date custom , then you will surely be ruined financially and then tossed aside like a bit of poo

good luck

A friend of mine went to a wedding in Loei last month. The bride and groom had been living together for three years at the time of the marriage, and he had been supporting the lady too. Thus, the sin soht asked of him was reduced from 300,000 to 100,000 baht. This was not returned to him as is sometimes the case in Isaan because the parents had paid for their daughter's university education, and felt this sum was owed due to her potential earning power in the future. Both bride and groom are Thai.

I might have posted it here elsewhere but I remember mentioning that the standard for sin soht was anywhere from 20,000-50,000 baht, not in the 100,000 and above range. My friend said for 50,000 baht the father might give you a few hairs from her head if she has a university education. The implication was that a village girl in the 'service' industry should expect the lower amount for her parents, but not parents of a girl who has graduated with a degree.

Who knows with any certainty. However this is what a number of Thais have told me.

I had this kind of discussion with my father in law and he accepted my point of view.. he told me that he would even aggreed to a wedding without any sin sod as long as I will stay with his daughter and take care of her.. I'm not going to ruin myself financially. I paid the sinsod I have promised before and I support the family of my wife (which is my family now too) as I can afford it.

I think a sin sod of 50 000 Baht is more or less history. A Thai friend of mine (also from Udonthani) is married with a Western guy, now living in Hua Hin. They haven't had their traditional wedding yet, still saving for the money; the mother ask for a sin sod of 1 000 000 Baht. Another Thai girl who has a master degree in engineering ask for 2 000 000 Baht. It is correct what your Thai friends told you.. the amount of the sin sod depends on the age, the status of the girl and family and the education of the girl...

And where does your average Thai get 1 or 2 million Baht to marry such Girl. It's a Myth that started the first time some silly falang came to town and fell for a Whopper. I have friends who married Girls from my wifes Village, good girls who had never seen the inside of a Bar. Neither had Children or had ever been married before, and both had decent jobs in Department Store's in Udon. The Sinsod for both was 70,000 baht with no expectation of looking after the parents or the family Farm. Trust me, it's a Myth =D>
