Things about some sites I do not like

Postby BobHelm » March 27, 2010, 11:34 am

I'm feeling in need of a moan today & haven't really got much to complain about so I thought I would be petty about a couple of web sites that I regularly sign onto & have a dig at things they do that I find annoying.

First is the UK National Lottery site.
Now before any of you start saying as a non resident of UK I have no right to be on there, let me say that I am in a UK based syndicate so am perfectly legal with regards to any actions I may take on the site!! :D
I really only go on to see if the jackpots have been won & see if the winners are UK based - not to play online games. Hence I usually log on early morning Thai time. Inevitably the lottery site is not open for games playing at this time. A 'flash' appears on the front screen telling you this. However the front page STILL takes ages to load as it still loads video screens of games etc. that you cannot play... WHY??? If the games can't be played don't waste people's time having to wait for advert for stuff they cannot do load - let them get on with what they CAN do!!

Second is Yahoo mail.
I have a Yahoo account that no-one I know would be readily capable of recognising me from. Any personal mail I do from a Hotmail account. The Yahoo account is one I only use to register membership on websites that require it, or as a valid e-mail account for free software. Hence no mail I get there is actually for me. Some is 'solicited' in that it is about products I have or sites I am a member of, but the vast majority of mail I get there is spam, pure & simple. Yahoo has a spam recognition program & rightly identified much of the spam mail as just that & puts it straight in a spam folder rather than leaving it in my in box. After about a month if I have done nothing with this mail Yahoo will delete it. However Yahoo does classify some valid mail as being spam as well - I imagine because the sender is sending out a lot of the same message to different e-mails at the same time - so I like to regularly delete any real spams to keep the size of what I have to look at down....
And here is the criticism...
Yahoo then throws up a message box & asks me if I am sure that I want to delete them.
It does not if I delete a message from my in box, only from my spam folder...
I assume the programmer has some logic in doing this - it just defeat me as to what that could possibly be!!

So that is all the petty gripes out of my system for today....unless I flounder across another in my searching...

Aa have you looked at deleting Incredimail, and installing something like Thunderbird?

You can set TB up so that it will look at all the email addresses you have (eg GMail, yahoo, hotmail etc), and you can read them all in the single mail client.

Email deleted from the Inbox goes to Trash and can be retrieved once deleted from the Inbox. Email deleted from Spam is gone forever. That's why Yahoo! has the warning in the Spam folder.

Hi Bob,
Used to go to Nat. Lot. site via msn. uk, or uk paper years ago. Took ages now I go direct to www.national-lottery.co.uk/player/p/home.do Which I keep on my Fav. list. Does not take very long. Just tried it. Took 8secs to download. Play not on, as you stated, but I only do lotto. and check my account on this site.
By the way about playing the lottery abroad, You can play if the country you are in does not forbid it. Sending monies from abroad seems to be the problem. I contacted them and as they were receiving payment from my British bank they said it was O.K. You also have to have an address in the British Isles, which I have. Only won the odd £10 yet, this weekend may be it.
Cheers Doug.

Thunderbird is from the same mob (Mozilla) who are responsible for Firefox. It is Open Source, and free.

I have been using it for a number of years now, and completely happy with it. You can find it here:

http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/

If you decide to make the change, you will need to research the issue of migrating your current emails, contacts list etc from Incredimail.. Google will give you the answers.

I would also suggest you download Mozbackup to do backups of TB, and FF if you use it.
