Udon vs. Khon Kaen??? : The Big Controversy!!!

Hi all,

Newbie here. Nice forum!

I really like KKC and enjoy living here. However, sometimes it is a little frustrating as it is not as "user friendly" to falang as some other places. And with my Thai as limited as it is, that becomes an issue sometimes. I have not had a chance to explore Udon very much, but each time I visit (usually en route to visa run), I get an increasing impression of there being more Western amenities, more falang-oriented businesses, restaurants, and shops, and a larger (or at least more organized) falang community. For example, there seems to be a lot more activity on this Udon forum than on the KhonKean.com forum were I usually hang out.

I would be interested to hear from you guys who have lived (or spent a lot of time) in both places. If you had to make a choice of a place to live, which would you choose, Udon or KKC? Why?

Thanks, lah! :yikes:

Aloha,

Rex

Khon Kaens road system is even worse than Udons and why dont you have any traffic lights at junctions - mad !
Udon has got (almost) everything here and i guess it can't be that bad as we are all still here.

I"ve been to kk many times .I 've studied in kk university for 3 months it's long enough to know what is kk like . and i think Udonthani is better than kk . For example the bigest department store here is bigger and more interesting while the bigest department stores in kk look so- so to me the only thing that make the department store in kk interesting is Mc :P (We dont have it in Udon)lol . I find that the road there is too busy and the way people drive is pretty crazy sometime and there is one big park there i think its dirty and its not as nice as the park in Udon . anyway I prefer one noddle shop in kk called Tekoo !! the taste of the noodle is extremely good hot spicy and sour ;) hehe so everytime I go back to KK i will always visit The Tekoo noddle shop :P oh one thing i like about kk is a night life!!! there are many kind of night pubs i think the night life there is better than in Udon for sure .

Thanks for the info Bangsean_girl.

I didn't get to see much nightlife while I was in Khon Kaen, although I've heard it's pretty good. I will be visiting again soon so I'll have a better look around then.

I voted for Udon because I'm not very familiar with Khon Kaen yet, although my first impressions of Khon Kaen were pretty positive.

I like the Black Canyon coffee shop at fairy plaza; they do some great Thai food especially the yum woon sen, Mmmm

I find KK rather flat and empty, the people don't smile so much. The night life is no better than Udon Thani's bars and discos. Lots of fantastic food. KK does not have Center point, or Nong Prajak. KK does not have a internet shop like Pop's.
I agree with Paul most people drive like Mr Toad in KK. Wear brown shorts when nearing a road junction. Nong Khai is a quick trip up Number Two, and trip South to Ubol Rattana Lake. Plenty to see and do in the area. I wonder how long it will be before Udon Thani gets a Maccy Dee?

I think you are going to get slightly one sided view with this one rex, as many do not make an active choice, their TW or TG comes from the Udon area, she will almost certainly prefer not too be too far from family, so Udon is it. However that was not your question. So for me, apart from the above reason (keeps the other side happy)

- KKC always seems to me to me more of a concrete jungle than Udon
- Traffic again....its horrendous. Udon is a bit mad at times, well most times, but its worse in KK
- Less to see in the Area of KK, mountains and the river and all the history stuff etc etc are not far away in Udon
- Nongkai border OR Immigration office as above poster; I don't need to do border runs/reports as I do not exceed 90 days (ahem, usually  ) on my multiple entry, but its an option for the future
- Its got most of what a farang might desire, but they can escape into the "Thai" world in 10 minutes driving time

If I had a choice, it would be between Udon and Chiang mai (not in Chiang mai, but in the area)

You can rely on a lady to judge because of the interest level of department stores and the food in noodle shops

Bangsean_girl, you said you liked the nightlife better in KK. Can you tell me more about that. I've never been there, but may put in a visit over Xmas. What sort of nightlife is there? You mentioned many pubs. Do these have live music? Are there friendly bars, and discos? Do many farangs go to the nightlife? What sort of age groups go to the disco's?

thanks

The big controversy? Not for me. Udon wins hands down. I always get lost in KK

biased reply, but been to kk few times, overnighted a couple and it doesn't do much for me. haven't invested a lot of time there or looking while there. but prefer udon much more.
