My in-laws buy Vietnamese Pizza a lot. It's really good but I don't know where they get it from.

My understanding is that the Vietnamese are the biggest landholders on both the Thai and Laos sides of the riverbanks at Nong Khai. The ThaSadet market properties are mostly all owned by those of Vietnamese ancestry! They are mostly Buddhists!I have gotten to know about many of them as they do the morning ''giving food to the monks'' trip!

Really an interesting post. My wife likes Viet food as does her family and they have some quite often. I certainly never thought I'd ever eat much less like Vietnamese food. Now we have it quite often. I'm pretty sure (as well as a farang can be when dealing with Thai families) there is not any Viet ancestry in her family. Her grandfather, now around 86, is one of the very few surviving WWII Thai Vets that actually fought the Japanese. He was, and it is said quietly, a communist in his youth. He knows that I am a USMC Vietnam Vet, likes me (probably more so than the rest of the family). He wants to speak with me as I do with him about many things, but I can't understand or speak Lao and my wife has difficulty translating Lao to English. I'm hoping to be able to learn from him before he passes. My wife says he wants someone who will listen to his stories and the family has heard them all. One Vet speaking to another Vet, I'd bet they haven't. Who knows, maybe he knows when and where Uncle Ho was in Thailand.

" Udon Thani, a province in the northeastern of Thailand, is the place where
contains of the biggest Vietnamese community in Thailand (Sophana: 2005, 10).
These Vietnamese immigrants came from all three regions of Vietnam with around
46,700 people in 1945 because of the World War II (Khachatphai: 1978, 10). At this
present time, there are three generations of Vietnamese immigrant living in Udon
Thani province. They still communicate to each other in Vietnamese, even though
some of them are now living outside the community. "

The rest of the article deals with Thai/Viet language issues.

For those of you who know your noodle soup, the best soup in town (IMO) are the few restaurants who serve it up Viet style.

Yes, Thai-Viets are quite well represented in this neck of the woods. There's more than a few of them over by Nong Bua Lam Phu way.

More than a few of the town/village names around here have Vietnamese sounding names.

And then there are the roadsigns in Vietnamese as you approach Nong Khai.

An kum, anyone?
