I would recommend my Samsung Front Loader washing machine (WF7650 I think - about 17K baht).

I would not recommend an earlier purchase - Samsung Electronic microwave, as have had to have it repaired twice - the touch controls/pads stopped responding. Now have a clockwork one (same make) - well you know what I mean - less to go wrong - just twist the knob!!

Got a Siemens front-loader in Pattaya that is nice and quiet and now I found the bloody instruction manual, can be quite fast. The wife said she didn't really like it so when we went shopping for one for the Udon mansion, I recommended the top-loading Whirlpool since that's what I had for years in Houston although it was a bit 'paeng' for her. Of course, being tarted up 1970's US technology, it sounds like a cement mixer and she wasn't very impressed with that at all. However, it does the duvets and the girls school clothes so everyone's happy now... they just close the door so they can't hear it. We also bought a tiny twin-tub washer/spin-drier gizmo which is for the baby's stuff and works well.

Drier is the great outdoors.

Fridges in Pattaya are an old Whirlpool (huge, and still working well) and a new smaller Hitachi. The new one in Udon is a big Samsung that was a bargain at the appliance place upstairs beside Big-C (same place I got the washers). One rule of thumb that I learned in Houston and applied here is forget about automatic ice-makers built-in to fridges. They eventually clog up or break and aint worth the additional expense IMHO.

Panasonic top loader washing machine, with fuzzy logic, has stood the test of time and abuse from all the family, it's still working after six years and never needed repair.

An even older Panasonic TV with a lovely sound from the speakers and excellent picture, never gone wrong and only had to replace the remote, which wore out with all the abuse, being dropped many times on the hard floor.

AEG Hammer drill I bought from England, well balanced and quiet. (Another one here who don't think much of Crap and Decker).

Sharp Rice Cooker, where others have burnt out and thrown in towel this one goes on and on.
Don't buy cheap, it ain't worth it.

Phillips Cucina Toaster still going strong.
Lots more choice in the shops for toasters now.
Now seeing more juicers being stocked, a couple of years ago you could not find them we bought one out from England.

I would like to thank all the posters for what is some good info. i'm just starting out with house in Maliwan and have to buy everything new. OUCH! Luckily the wife is a pretty good cheap charlie although she didn't think the idea of just using a mirror and watching ourselves for a tv was anything but ba, just can't understand that. The big purchases now are for fridge, kitchen stove (Thai style) and of course TV/DVD. Computer comes later, not bringing this old one from SE Texas when I finally get there full time.

Thanks again for the info.

coming from states.............................bring a very nice laptop with you, you won't be disappointed. better and cheaper than anything over here, along with cameras/camcorders, especially those new hard drive ones. if it's electronic and universal plug, self adjusting or can switch 120/220v, then bring it with you. they sell overpriced junk here.

One of the things I consider when buying appliances is the service policy of the seller. If the appliance needs servicing will they do it, or must it go to a service center for that brand. If it must go to a service center, where is the nearest one. If it's not in Udon I will try to find a brand that has a local service center. It could be gone for weeks if it needs servicing in Bangkok. Many of the brands don't have service centers in Udon.

While Tesco and Big C carry many appliances I believe they do the same things that Sam's Club and other big warehouse sales companies in the states do. In order to offer lower prices they have models made for them that use lower quality components. They make look exactly like others in appliances stores but the model numbers will be slightly different. Also their service policies are not customer friendly.

I prefer appliance shopping at the bigger local dealers. They are always willing to discount and most will deliver and set up for free and provide service if needed.

Finally settled on an LG brand fridge with ice maker. Super deal at Home Pro. Also purchased an Electrolux front-loading clothes dryer at the same time.

Both have operated very well, and delivery was free.

I agree, it is better if you buy a refrigerator with ice maker. Because you can easily produce ice cubes not only for cooling your food and etc. Just to make sure that you buy a good refrigerator, LG will be ok.
